We tend to think kindness means keeping people comfortable.
But for thoughtful, capable leaders, the kindest thing you can do is often the hardest: tell someone the truth before the gap between what they think is happening and what's actually happening gets too wide to close gently.
When we avoid a hard conversation to spare someone's feelings, we don't actually protect them — we just make sure they're the last one to find out there's a problem.
Kindness says, "I respect you enough to tell you what I'm seeing." Comfort says, "I'd rather neither of us feel awkward right now."
Clear isn't the same as blunt. And discomfort isn't the same as harm.
